![]() It willingly grows in both full sun and light shade and, even more importantly, it performs particularly well as an informal hedge. Although there is no shortage of flowers when this Abelia is in bloom, it is not planted primarily as an exceptionally attractive flowering shrub, but rather as a very reliable grower that holds its own as a background shrub amongst other plants. Abelia grandiflora Kaleidoscope is a wonderful semi-evergreen shrub with bright yellow variegated foliage and scented pink & white flowers in late Summer. It produces bunches of bell-shaped, white flowers with a soft pink tint, and the calyces are almost rosy pink to light purple. Slightly fragrant, the blooms are produced continuously cover a long period extending from late. This one tiny branch started the entire selection of Kaleidoscope Abelia and the plant received a U.S. (Some newer hybrids have lovely variegated leaves.) Abelia × grandiflora (Glossy Abelia) is a medium-sized, rounded, semi-evergreen shrub with gracefully arching branches, densely clothed with small glossy oval, dark green leaves and clusters of pink-tinged, white, bell-shaped flowers. In 1997, Randy Lindsey of Locust, North Carolina discovered a branch of Kaleidoscope growing on one plant of Abelia x grandiflora ‘Little Richard,’ which is a non-variegated selection of Abelia. Its small, oval-shaped leaves are dark green and glossy, but it is quite normal to see a bronze tint on both new and older leaves. This garden hybrid is an evergreen shrub that grows to about 2 x 1,5 m, with long lateral branches that spread elegantly to form a rounded, bushy shape. In the colder gardens in particular, and even in ‘difficult’ climates such as coastal gardens, you can depend on Abelia x Grandiflora ‘Kaleidoscope’. With its compact growth, Abelia x Grandiflora ‘Kaleidoscope’ is the perfect feature plant for smaller gardens. In autumn, the yellow turns bright orange, and by winter it is mostly fiery red. In summer the bright yellow changes to golden yellow, and the centres turn deep green. The new growth in spring is bright yellow around the edges with light green in the centre of the leaves.
